FAQs

Is Young Scholars a good fit for me?

If you are looking for a community, which can provide positive peer pressure, accountability and support, Young Scholars may be right for you.

If you are primarily looking for friends for your children, a co-op would be better suited for you.

What's included in tuition?

Our curriculum, access to multiple online platforms- Google Classroom, Brain Pop, IXL, Spelling City, Quizlet, Khan Academy, and Moby Max. Multiple platforms are offered so you can find a good fit for your child. You aren't obligated to use any of these if they don't work for your child.

Is there a virtual option?

Yes, we are offering a virtual option this year! Different age groups have access to recorded material or live classes.

Is this a hybrid program?

We allow a limited number of drop-off students on campus. There is an additional $500 fee per semester per child.

Is it still homeschooling if it happens in community?

Yes, homeschooling takes many different forms.  If you decide which curriculum to use, set your own schedule and have authority over your child, you are homeschooling.

How is YS different from a coop?

A co-op is a co-operative effort between homeschooling parents to provide classes and opportunities for their children that might be otherwise difficult or too costly to provide at the family level.  There may or may not be an academic focus and the offerings aren't always consistent.

Young Scholars is a comprehensive program for families who choose to homeschool in community.  In addition to a rigorous curriculum, we provide flexibility, a multi-disciplinary and whole-child approach.
We offer a variety of options for our pre-school, elementary, junior high and high school students. Younger siblings are welcome. Our classes are mainly physical activities and enrichment classes.

There are many curricula out there; how is YS different?

Most curricula on the market are based on a singular pedagogy, lack flexibility, and focus solely on academics. Young Scholars is the first community based, eclectic organized homeschool program in New Orleans!  Young Scholars incorporates best practices from multiple educational philosophies, creating an eclectic program focusing on the development of the whole child. Young Scholars doesn't have age restrictions and allows children to be placed according to ability not age.

Is Ys comprehensive or will I need a separate curriculum?

Young Scholars offers an online curriculum that can be used in its entirety without supplementation.  However, out of our desire to remain flexible, you are able to substitute classes or curriculum as you see fit.

As a parent, how do I participate in YS?

As a parent, you partner with us in educating your child.  Each parent who opts to lead three classes based on skill, passion or knowledge are eligible for a discount. This enables parents to teach from their strengths, while allowing children to be exposed to other teaching styles and personalities.

How do you decide what level to place my child?

Assessments are given for Math, Reading and Writing.  Children are placed in appropriate grade clusters, 3-5 years, K-1st grade, 2nd-3rd grade, 4th-6th grade, 7th-8th grade, 9th-10th grade or 11th-12th grade.

What happens if my child is advanced or behind in some areas, but on level in others?

Most children are on different levels in multiple subjects, which is one reason we have clusters, not grades.  Children can move up or down within clusters as well, so Tom can be in the K-2nd grade cluster, but more up to the 3rd-5th grade cluster for Math if necessary.

Do I have to use the resources you provide?

No, we offer several options because different children require different approaches. You are more than welcome to use what we suggest or find a suitable alternative for your family.

What qualifications do class leaders need?

Parents lead classes and are asked to teach in an area of knowledge, passion or interest.  Class leaders also attend a training to assist with classroom management skills, redirection and alternative educational approaches.
